Dr. Lassi Heininen is a Research Director at Institute for Atmospheric and Earth Research (INAR) at University of Helsinki, and Emeritus Professor at Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lapland, Finland. His other academic positions include Adjunct Faculty at Trent University (Canada), Visiting Professor at University of Akureyri (Iceland), Professor at Northern (Arctic) Federal University (Russia), Senior Research Scholar (associate) at International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) (Austria). He is also Editor of Arctic Yearbook, Academic leader of Calotte Academy, Head of UArctic TN on Geopolitics and Security Studies, and member of the Advisory Board of Arctic Circle.

Dr. Heininen lectures, teaches and supervises regularly abroad, and actively publishes in international academic publications. His research fields include IR, Geopolitics, Security Studies, Environmental Politics, Arctic/Northern Studies, Science diplomacy. His recent scientific publications include “Arctic Geopolitics from Classical to Critical Approach – Importance of Immaterial Factors” in Geography, Environment, Sustainability (2018: 11- 1); “Special Features of Arctic Geopolitics – A Potential Asset for World Politics” in The GlobalArctic Handbook (Springer 2018); “The Arctic, Baltic and North-Atlantic ‘cooperative regions’ in ‘Wider Northern Europe’” in Journal of Baltic Studies (2017: 48 – 4), and co-editor of Sino-Nordic Arctic Cooperation: Objectives and Approaches (CNARC & SIIS 2018).
